ICELAND: The Magic of Sel

Sel is a small, old, farm house within Vatnajokull National Park. This little spot is absolutely picture perfect, and really encapsulates the rural charm of Iceland. The lighting up here was so perfect, it looked like a dream. It's hard to capture the magic in photos. Though simple and quaint, Sel was certainly one of my favorite stops within the park. It's hard to resist the cuteness of Icelandic Horses!

ICELAND: Hiking to the Black Falls

Svartifoss (aka black waterfall) is a magnificent waterfall surrounded by black basalt columns (hence the name). You can find this nearly 40 foot tall beauty in Vatnajokull National Park (in Skaftafell, South Iceland), which is a must-stop for anyone that enjoys hiking! We visited in September, and the trail to the falls was surrounded by foliage with beautiful golden autumn tones. In the far distance, we could see the glaciers and mountain caps.
Svartifoss can be viewed from several different view points - you can see it from afar, from above, and you can also walk up close to it on ground level. The hike to Svartifoss is about a mile from the visitor center, though it is almost entirely uphill. On your hike, you can also view several other waterfalls from afar! This hike is not too strenuous and can be completed within an hour. In our opinion it's absolutely worth a stop.

Tips for hiking anywhere,including Iceland:
Always dress in layers! The beginning of our day was cold and there was some light rain. However, by the time we had finished our hiking it was sunny and warm.
Wear sunscreen.
Bring water. Snacks are always a good idea too! Nothing like having a quick little lunch near a beautiful view point.

Before heading back to the visitor center, we hiked a little further to a panoramic view point - Sjónarsker, and then to a charming old farmhouse (Sel, which you can read about in a future post). We found that Vatnajokull had quite a lot to offer.

Have you ever hiked outside of your native country?

ICELAND: Hiking on a Glacier

If you view this photo larger, you can see people in the distance. This helps to show the full scale of this incredible place!

Want a uniquely surreal experience while in Iceland? We'd highly recommend a Glacier Hike. We booked ours through Extreme Iceland, and it was absolutely worth it. After a short journey via bus and lessons on safety, we were able to hike along Svinafellsjokull glacier. This location was used for several movies, including Batman Beyond, Interstellar, and Game of Thrones. It's easy to see why its a popular spot - it truly felt and looked as though we were exploring a different planet.

The guides were super informative, and so in addition to this incredible experience we also learned a lot about glaciers and climate change. While we've attempted to capture this experience through photos - it really needs to be seen in person to comprehend. The ice beneath the surface was a brilliant blue, and the entire surface glittered in the sunlight.

All in all, this is an experience that we will never forget. We would highly recommend Extreme Iceland for their expertise and organization.

What is one of your most memorable travel moments?
