Iceland's Golden Circle is a popular tour of some of the most incredible natural attractions nearby Reykjavik. We would recommend going clockwise from the city as this will allow you to see the main attractions first. The entire trip can be driven within about 4 hours, but you should plan a day to complete the sights if you enjoy photography. In addition to the main 3 stops (Thingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss), we also added on some stops to some lesser-traveled destinations - which was super rewarding. After our stop at Geysir, we made our way to Gullfoss - Europe's second most powerful waterfall. This giant isn't visible from the road, and so it's only after walking for a few minutes along the path that you can begin to take it in. This was absolutely a highlight of our trip, it was the most impressive and incredible waterfall we had ever seen. In some of the photos below, you can see some tiny people for scale, but it's difficult to capture the enormity of this waterfall. It's such a humbling site.
Gullfoss was certainly stunning, but you can never see too many waterfalls! We decided to take our chances of finding the hidden and surreal waterfall, Bruarfoss. You can see more photos and read about it here.
Next, we couldn't resist stopping to see some adorable Icelandic Horses! This was our first stop to see some horses, but certainly not our last. They were so friendly, adorable and photogenic - the same of which can be said of the Icelanders that stopped to greet us. These equines certainly seem to be accustomed to visitors and comfortable with being in front of the camera.
We finished our tour of the Golden Circle with a stop at some lava fields, and a stop at Kerid Crater. You can read about that in part three.
