ABANDONED: Everglades Memorial Hospital III

Everglades Memorial Hospital opened in 1936 in Pahokee, but was later privatized and renamed to Everglades Regional Medical center in 1986. By 1991, this hospital was closed by the Health Care District Board, and medical care was instead focused on a different, near by hospital. A series of lawsuits then erupted between the Health Care District board and the hospital, ultimately culminating in the hospital's financial ruin. It was finally officially shut down in 1998, but remains standing to this day - although stripped nearly completely of any hospital supplies.

Pahokee is a small city of under 10,000 residents, located on the shore of Lake Okeechobee. This is one of Florida's oldest cities, and once thrived due to it's agriculture. Today, however, this town is economically depressed, as evidenced by the many abandoned businesses and buildings that line the streets.

So much shattered glass! This is why proper footwear is so important.

Here is the skeletal remains of the morgue, where the drawers for corpses would be.

ICELAND: Fjadrargljufur Canyon

Fjadrargljufur Canyon (please don't ask me how to pronounce that - despite my best efforts I never mastered this one!) is such a stunning location. It seriously looks like something you would find in Middle Earth (Lord of the Rings, anyone?). Getting to the canyon was a bit of a challenge - the drive was difficult, and the hiking trail was muddy. To top it all off, it rained on us the entire time. Regardless of the elements, I would absolutely do it all over again - the view was so worth it!

This ancient site was created by gradual erosion from glaciers over thousands of years. It's a truly unique location that is worth a visit. It is located slightly off of the main road, but is accessible by most vehicles. Plus, you can also park near the bottom for a view through the canyon. We missed out on that view, in favor of walking around the rim of the canyon.

This is part of a series of posts about our trip to Iceland.

We were surprised to find dozens of perfectly intact light-bulbs among the wreckage of the building.

It's the small, remaining details in places like this that make them so magnetic, to me. Things like: teddy bear wall paper that once lined a pediatric room, stripped cabinets that still hold labels for surgical tools, procedural notes for incoming patients...

and, oddly (for a place like this), intact light-bulbs. Also, so. many. toilets.
