NEVADA: Visiting the Neon Boneyard

The Neon Museum was by far one of our favorite stops during our visit to Las Vegas. The museum includes a gift shop and outdoor "boneyard" where the old neon goes to rest. The museum is dedicated to preserving and restoring these pieces, so although they are no longer as shiny as they were in their glory days, many do still work! We took an hour long guided tour to learn about the history and craft of neon - which is exactly the kind of nerdy stuff we love to get into.

Combined with the history of Las Vegas, the Boneyard is a stunning landscape for anyone that enjoys ruins and roadside attractions. We opted for a daytime visit - but the museum does also allow visitors at night - where you can see the signs lit up!

NOLA: St. Louis Cemetery No 2

St. Louis Cemetery No 2 is located just a few blocks away from the famous St. Louis Cemetery No 1. While equally as impressive, No. 2 is free to enter - no tour guide required. Like No 1, there are many notable musicians and New Orleanians that rest here. Also similarly, it is easy to lose yourself wandering through the twisting maze of tombs.

While these cemeteries are lovingly maintained, there are still always some grave sites in disrepair due to weather or vandalism. Man-made structures are often no match for the heat, humidity, and hurricanes prevalent in this corner of the USA.

Above, you can see where the graves are beginning to sink deeper into the earth over time due to flooding and the soft, swampy ground composition.
